What is EngSoc?

We provide Internet resources to engineering students at Carleton University. EngSoc is a computer system that allows shell access and provides web space, e-mail addresses, and all that. Am I eligible?

To be eligible for a free account, you must be enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton University. Full and part time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible as are faculty and staff. Basically, you are eligible if you are in Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Design, or Information Technology (BIT).

Need to reset your password?

If you need to reset your password, go to our automated account password reset page. You will be given a random temporary password. Then, log in using PuTTY to set your own password.

How do I get an account?

Signup is now done online. The form is available here. You will be required to print and sign a form, so make certain you have a printer handy.

How do I connect to the wireless network?

Currently Up! Check the News section for more information! You must have an EngSoc account to be able to log into the network. For full details, and to get a network key, visit this page.

How do I login to EngSoc?

For shell access you use SSH. There is a Java client available through the 'Login' link on the left and clients are available for Windows, MacOS and most operating systems. Please see the link below for alternative means of file transfer and shell access. To read your e-mail you can use webmail, IMAP or POP3, or a console-based MTA like pine or mutt.

Our History

EngSoc was started on or about April 1, 1995 which means EngSoc has been around for more than a decade. While we were updating the website, we came across some rather old pages that are a bit interesting. Take a look at why Linux was chosen, EngSoc's history, or a look at some old hardware and the network details. It wasn't too long ago when EngSoc had about 380MHz of CPU, 224 MB of RAM and 11 GB of storage across several machines. Now it's more like 9 GHz of CPU, 5 GB of RAM and over 600 GB of storage.
